Pedro Sauer comes to town

Today was Pedro Sauer Seminar at Summit Martial Arts! So much learned and gained today from having him in.

For a history of Pedro Sauer, see here: https://www.bjjheroes.com/bjj-fighters/pedro-sauer

What I would add after meeting him is that he is an amazing BJJ instructor. His ability to communicate the details of a move involve not just the move but the necessary movements to execute a move. The, as he called it, "invisible jiu jitsu". He is also a very humble, kind person that is extremely interested in seeing people do BJJ for a lifetime not just for a year or two by employing safe training strategies. When he walked onto the mat, he had a huge smile and went around to every person on the mat to shake their hand, look them in the eye, and thank them or welcome them to the seminar. A wonderful person indeed.

As far as training we worked on understanding the control that can be had from the guard and it does not have to be such a defensive position. Instead a means to an end in terms of escape, a means to frustrating your opponent into a mistake or making the escape easier. These are some of the highlights that I captured, obviously not able to capture everything:
1- Heel in the hip as a means of controlling the opponent. The heel can be used in combination with the lapel hold to maintain someone in your guard. By turning your toes in toward your shin and making the heel "active", much like a frog, you can make your leg very strong and near impossible to move off the hip.
2- Utilization of the foot to stop the arm from completing the pass. Person tries to pass the gaurd, hand holds the lapel, same side as lapel leg is in the hip. Opponents arm trying to pressure down the hip is controlled by the foot. When they try to go under the foot, you grip with the toes. When they try to escape the bicep hold by going over, you use the heel to push.
3- Stopping the guard pass to triangle. Grab lapel and arm as if to escape. Allow leg that would function as the under leg gaurd pass to be taken by the opponent. When they take, fall to the side and apply pressure with the leg that is trying to be passed to the elbow/arm that is trying to pass under the leg to complete the pass. Essential to grab the arm as it attempts to make the pass. Slide the leg into the triangle holding the arm as you do and lock the triangle. This move seemed so amazingly simple yet complex! The triangle just falls into place with this move!
4-  From the gaurd to the armlock. Need to rehash the details.
5- From bottom in mount, opponent has cross collar choke. Defend the choke with one hand to stop the choke. Hold that arm throughout the movement. Upa with choke defense sweep but with two slight differences. trap the far leg under and when you get your opponent over, dont go to mount just let them fall over. Leg on top stays on top, leg on bottom does a knee slice. Use knee slice leg to control the opponent by holding the body. Other leg comes over, falls to control the head. Submit opponent via armlock.
5- Sweep from the bottom in side mount. Need to rehash the details.

Other notes:
- Control can be had from anywhere. Control whatever is given to you.
- No pressure! Not there to perform but to learn. Everyone is a friend.

Overall, his resounding message was to be playful. Use the gym as the laboratory to try things out and have a good time. If the opponent gets a good submission, tap quickly and ask them what it was. If it isnt a good move, sweep them or dont allow them to have the move. I think that this will help me to learn feel better. When is a good time to go, when is a good time to not go and know you are beat. How to never let it happen again!

A great day indeed.
